Steel Ridge

The roof over the new bedroom will not have exposed rafters, so we could use a steel RSJ to construct the ridge. We needed a 7m 9 inch steel, with a total weight of 175KG. This should be easy compared to the oak to come. We could not crane it on, so we came up with a new idea.

The beam went in through the window using the bobcat. We somehow managed to jam the end of it in the bucket, and lift it.

Using the block and tackle it was winched up to first floor level, and the floor joists put in under it. The beam is longer than the room. At one end it could poke out where a door was to go, at the other it could rest in the window opening. A car jack was used to lift the beam up, and then put bricks under it, lift the jack, lift the beam, rest on bricks. This process was repeated over and over, until it was in place.

In this picture you can see the car jack in use, the steel window lintel has just been put in, but needs time to set before the ridge is put on it.

Its up, another very satisfying moment.
